RO substantially reduces the dissolved minerals that cause scale in the treated drinking-water line. An under-sink or countertop system does not soften the rest of the household water supply.

Refillable countertop systems usually need only worktop space and an electrical socket. Under-sink systems require plumbing to the cold-water feed and drain, a drinking-water tap and, for most tankless models, power.
