Should a whole-house water filter be installed before or after a pressure tank? In most private well-water systems, the correct position is after the pressure tank. The usual sequence is the well pump, pressure tank, whole-house filter and then the pipework supplying the home.
Installing the filter after the tank allows the pump and pressure system to operate normally before the water passes through the filtration stage. This helps maintain reliable pressure, reduces unnecessary strain on the pump and ensures filtered water is supplied throughout the property.
There are exceptions. A coarse sediment separator may sometimes be fitted before the pressure tank where sand or heavy sediment is a persistent problem. However, this must be suitable for the application and should not restrict the pump or interfere with the pressure-control equipment.
The Correct Order: Filter and Pressure Tank
For most private well installations, the recommended order is:
Well pump → pressure tank → whole-house filter → water treatment equipment → household outlets
The pressure tank should normally come before a cartridge filter, carbon filter or other whole-house filtration system. The filter should be installed on the main pipe after the tank but before the supply divides into hot and cold branches. This arrangement allows all incoming household water to be treated.
Homes supplied directly by the mains usually do not have a well pressure tank. In that situation, the whole-house filter is normally installed after the internal stop tap or water meter and before the pipework branches around the property.
Understanding the Function of a Pressure Tank
What a Pressure Tank Does for a Well-Water System
A pressure tank stores a volume of water delivered by the well pump and holds it under pressure. When someone opens a tap, the tank can supply water without requiring the pump to start immediately.
Once the pressure drops to the system’s cut-in setting, the pressure switch starts the pump. The pump then replenishes the tank until the cut-out pressure is reached. This controlled cycle provides steadier water delivery and prevents the pump from switching on every time a small amount of water is used.
Why It Is a Critical Component
The pressure tank protects the pump from rapid and repeated cycling. Excessive cycling can increase energy use and shorten the life of the pump, pressure switch and other components.
The tank also helps maintain more consistent pressure for showers, taps and appliances. It must therefore be able to receive water from the pump without an unsuitable fine filter creating resistance between the pump and the tank.

Protecting Pump and Pressure-Tank Operation
Every filter creates some resistance to water flow, and that resistance increases as the cartridge collects sediment. If a restrictive filter is installed before the pressure tank, it can reduce the flow reaching the tank and interfere with normal pump cycling.
Placing the filter after the tank allows the pump, pressure switch and tank to work together as designed. The stored and pressurised water then passes through the filter before travelling to the household outlets.
This does mean that ordinary cartridge filtration will not protect the pressure tank itself from sediment. Where a well produces significant sand or grit, the correct solution may be a pump-safe sediment separator or specialist well treatment—not simply moving a fine cartridge filter ahead of the tank.
Ensuring Consistent Water Pressure Through the Home
A correctly sized filter installed after the pressure tank should treat the household supply without causing an unacceptable pressure drop. The filter housing, cartridge, pipe size and expected peak flow must all be considered.
An undersized or blocked cartridge can still weaken showers and reduce flow at several open taps. Pressure gauges fitted before and after the filter can help identify when the cartridge is becoming restricted and needs replacement.
Consequences of Incorrect Placement
Pump Strain, Pressure Problems and Reduced Filter Performance
Installing a fine or undersized filter before the pressure tank can starve the tank of flow, cause unusual pump behaviour and make fault diagnosis more difficult. Incorrect positioning of the pressure switch or isolation valves can create further operational and safety problems.
Even when installed in the correct position, a filter that is too small for the property can produce noticeable pressure loss and require frequent cartridge changes. The installation should include isolation valves and, where appropriate, a bypass so the filter can be serviced without unnecessarily shutting down the entire water supply.
Always follow the filter and pump manufacturers’ instructions. If the system uses a private well, contains heavy sediment or has an unusual pressure-control arrangement, have the layout confirmed by a qualified water-treatment installer or plumber before altering the pipework.
