Understanding Reverse Osmosis Water Hammer: Causes and Solutions

A bang near a reverse osmosis system may be water hammer, but not every RO noise is a pressure surge. Pumps, solenoid valves, trapped air, drain flow, loose tubing and automatic shut-off components can all produce clicks, humming or vibration.

Correct diagnosis matters. Installing an arrestor or reducing the water pressure without identifying the cause may fail to solve the noise and could affect the RO system’s performance.

What Is Water Hammer and Why Does It Occur?

Water hammer is a pressure surge produced by a sudden change in the velocity of flowing water. It commonly occurs when a fast-acting valve closes and abruptly stops the flow.

The resulting pressure wave travels back through the pipework until its energy is absorbed or it reaches a point of relief. This may produce a single sharp bang, pipe movement or vibration.

The Physics of Sudden Valve Closure

Moving water has momentum. If a valve closes gradually, the flow slows more gently. If it closes very quickly, the sudden change can create a short pressure spike.

The severity depends on factors including flow velocity, static pressure, pipe length, pipe material and valve-closing speed. Small RO tubing does not automatically create stronger water hammer; it also introduces friction and usually carries a lower flow than the main household supply.

A genuine pressure wave can make inadequately supported pipes strike surrounding surfaces. Repeated severe surges may stress joints, valves and connected equipment, although one small click from an RO unit does not prove that damage is occurring.

How Reverse Osmosis Systems Can Contribute to Water Hammer

Some plumbed-in RO systems use electrically controlled valves, pumps or automatic shut-off devices that start and stop water flow. A rapid change at one of these points may create or expose an existing water-hammer problem.

Manually filled countertop dispensers are not connected to the household pipework and will not normally cause water hammer in that plumbing.

Rapid Shut-Off Valves in RO Units

A tankless RO system may contain solenoid valves that operate during dispensing, flushing and shutdown. Tank-based systems use check valves and automatic shut-off components to control production as the storage tank fills.

These internal parts are model-specific. Do not replace them with generic slow-closing valves or alter their operation unless instructed by the manufacturer.

Small-Diameter Tubing and Flow Restriction

Kinked, crushed or incorrectly routed tubing may cause poor flow, vibration or drain noise. It can also make normal pump or valve operation sound louder inside a cupboard.

Check that tubing is fully inserted, free from sharp bends and not striking the cabinet. Do not modify the specified tube diameter or flow restrictor.

Identifying Symptoms of Water Hammer in Your RO System

Start by noting exactly when the sound occurs. A single bang immediately after a tap or valve closes is more consistent with water hammer than a continuous hum, drain gurgle or repeated rattle.

Loud Banging or Knocking Noises

Check whether the bang follows operation of the RO tap, washing machine, dishwasher, toilet valve or another fast-closing appliance. Sound can travel through pipework, so the RO unit may not be the original source.

Vibrating Pipes

Loose mains pipes or unsupported RO tubing can amplify movement. Tubing touching a cupboard panel may create a knocking sound even without a significant pressure surge.

Do not hold or dismantle pipework while the system is operating. Turn off the water and electrical supply before inspecting installation components.

Potential Damage to Plumbing and Appliances

Investigate recurring sharp bangs, visible pipe movement, leaks or loosening fittings. If water is escaping, isolate the supply and stop using the system until it has been inspected.

Methods to Prevent or Reduce Water Hammer in RO Systems

Installing Water-Hammer Arrestors

A correctly selected arrestor absorbs the pressure wave using a sealed air chamber or piston. It should be fitted close to the confirmed shock source and installed according to its manufacturer’s instructions.

An arrestor is not the correct remedy for pump vibration, trapped air, a blocked drain line or loose tubing. Ask a competent plumber to confirm the cause and suitable arrestor size.

Using Slow-Closing Valves

A slow-closing valve may help elsewhere in the household plumbing, but internal RO valves must remain those specified by the RO manufacturer. Contact the supplier if a solenoid or automatic shut-off valve chatters or closes abnormally.

Securing Water Pipes

Correct supports can prevent pipes and tubing from striking surrounding surfaces. Avoid over-tightening clips or crushing flexible RO tubing. Securing pipework reduces movement but does not remove a genuine pressure spike.

Adjusting Water Pressure

Measure the incoming pressure rather than guessing. Compare the reading with the operating range in the specific RO manual. Excessive pressure may require a suitable pressure-reducing valve, but reducing already-low pressure can impair production and filtration performance.

Troubleshooting Existing Water Hammer Issues with Your RO System

Use this sequence before purchasing parts:

  1. Identify whether the sound occurs during dispensing, startup, flushing or shutdown.
  2. Check whether another household appliance triggers it.
  3. Inspect accessible tubing for kinks, restrictions and contact with the cupboard.
  4. Flush the system as instructed after installation or filter replacement to remove trapped air.
  5. Measure the incoming water pressure.
  6. Check the model manual for normal operating sounds and pressure limits.
  7. Contact the manufacturer or installer before modifying internal components.

Checking Valve Operation

Repeated clicking, chattering or rapid cycling may indicate unstable pressure, a check-valve issue or another control fault. Do not dismantle powered valves unless the manufacturer’s service procedure permits it.

Inspecting for Loose Pipes

With the supplies isolated, check accessible pipe clips and tubing routes. If the bang affects the main plumbing, continues after the RO unit is isolated or cannot be traced safely, arrange an inspection by a competent plumber.
